Drama in the Bleistätter Moor: Swans in need - savior in action!
On September 23, 2025, the Bleistätter Moor in Carinthia was a tragic commitment of the Voluntary Fire Brigade Steindorf and Feldkirchen. The fire brigade was alerted to save two swans, which were in an emergency. However, the use was associated with various challenges, since the animals could not be reached without a boat.
The Steindorf volunteer fire brigade moved out with six emergency services, while the Feldkirchen fire brigade supported with ten emergency services. The rescue operation required the use of a boat to reach and recover the swans. Unfortunately, the rescue brought mixed results. A swan could be recovered alive and handed over to the animal welfare competence center (Tiko). The second swan, on the other hand, was recovered lifeless. The circumstances of his death are now examined by the Feldkirchen district administration.
The role of the fire brigade in animal rescues
Animal rescues are among the central tasks of the fire brigade. The fire brigade is often called for help when animals are in danger, be it a horse in the ditch, a cat in the tree or other emergencies. Firefighters Theresa Balzer, however, recommends that the fire brigade only contact the fire if an animal is in an acute emergency. In some cases, common sense can be sufficient to cope with the situation, such as in cats that can come down from trees independently.
The animal rescue not only has an immediate effect on animal welfare, but can also ward off dangers to the public. Although the use of fire brigades for animal rescues is generally subject to a fee for the animal owners, there are also regulations in which the municipality can cover the costs if no owner can be determined.
The use in the Bleistätter Moor illustrates the importance of the commitment of the voluntary fire brigades when rescue in need. Such missions are not only vital for the animals, but also a sign of compassion and help in our community. At the same time, he reminds us that it is always important to carefully weigh the circumstances and the need for animal rescues.
