Young heroes in Höchst: boys save driver from construction pit!

On Sunday, April 27, 2025, a remarkable incident occurred in Höchst at around 11:30 a.m. An older lady drove her silver Lexus into a construction pit on Frühlingstrasse, near Blumen Gehrer. At this critical moment, two boys, Niklas Brunner (11 years old) and Julian Hutter (12 years old), were on site and observed what was happening. Immediately after the accident, they acted quickly and prudently.

The two boys helped the driver out of her vehicle and administered first aid. They also immediately notified the police and fire department, so professional support arrived quickly. The Höchst fire department was able to secure the car with lifting cushions and wooden supports and recover the vehicle almost undamaged. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured. When the boys asked about the situation, she replied modestly: “No problem.”

First aid as an important life skill

This incident highlights the importance of first aid knowledge, especially for children. It has been offering this since 2011 Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) special material to teach children aged seven to twelve important rules of behavior. These measures are intended to help children deal with dangers in everyday life without fear and to strengthen their ability to help themselves.

The BBK's goal is, among other things, to provide information about the German assistance system, including emergency services and the fire department. This can help children react correctly in emergencies and feel safer.

Initiatives to promote first aid for children

In addition to the BBK programs, there are innovative approaches to introduce children to the basics of first aid in a playful way. One example is the coloring and workbook “First Aid for Children”, which was published by the Friends and Supporters of the Rescue Helicopter Christoph 9 e.V. and K&L Verlag. In this book, children learn how to react correctly in emergency situations through the story of Mario, Olivia and their dachshund Waldi. It covers important topics such as burns, tick bites and poisoning and includes vivid illustrations and interactive tasks.

This teaching material is distributed free of charge to primary school children in the Wesel district and receives broad support from various companies. The aim is not only to inform children, but also to actively involve them in the process of dealing with dangers.

The courageous efforts of Niklas and Julian show how important such knowledge is and how children can help decisively in an emergency through the right education.
