Great fire in East Tyrol: emergency services fight against the flames!
Nußdorf-Debant, Österreich - A major fire hit the recycling facility in Nußdorf-Debant, Lienz district at the weekend. Almost 1,000 emergency services have been in use since Saturday to extinguish the fire and bring the situation under control. Security State Councilor Astrid Mair and Federal Minister Norbert Tettschnig found out about the progress and the current challenges in deployment on Monday.
The fire is now largely under control. Around 120 emergency services continue to work to remove the waste piles and to extinguish embers and brand nests. Mair thanked the emergency services for their tireless efforts, which was associated with high physical stress and strategic challenges. The situation was increasingly stabilized by the intensive operations of the fire brigade and other rescue workers.
at-Alert warning system and population protection
As part of the fire event, several official warnings about the AT-Alert system were sent. This warning system, which has been implemented in Tyrol since the previous year, has the goal of ensuring quick communication in the event of crisis and disaster. A total of 11 push reports about the state of Tyrol app and 15 information were sent to the media and the population. The AT-Alert system sends warnings to all mobile phone devices in the affected areas, regardless of municipal boundaries, and renewed its warnings every 24 hours while there is a risk.
The population was warned by the AT-Alert system and asked to keep doors and windows closed in the case of smell of smoke and fire and to avoid the outdoor stay. A current downgrade of the population warning was made after environmental measurements were carried out by the company analytical Taskforce Munich. These showed that no limit value overruns were found at the 18 sampling points.
evaluation of the situation and infrastructural security
The drinking water supply in the Lienz valley kettle is still guaranteed and the power supply is stable because the electricity masts have been temporarily secured. However, the drau cycle path in the immediate area of application remains closed, while the waste disposal in the district can continue without restrictions. Mair and Complete emphasized the importance of effective crisis management that builds on the experience of real damage events.
The Federal Office for Population Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK) plays a central role in the development of crisis management strategies. It analyzes damage events and supports authorities in optimizing their crisis organization. Successful crisis management requires close cooperation between state and private actors to improve information streams during a crisis.
In the coming days, it will continue to be observed closely how the situation develops, and the efforts of the emergency services will continue to be supported by the state government and the federal government.
