Gas exit in Mödling: tragedy with a fatality and an injured person
Today, August 13, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Mödling, Lower Austria, which was triggered by a gas leak in a building pit. The Mödling volunteer fire brigade was alerted, and the first reports of at least one person in the affected building pit were the first reports. When they arrived, the emergency services found two unconscious people, which required immediate rescue measures under respiratory protection. At the same time, fire protection was built up to minimize possible dangers.
In addition to the Mödling fire brigade, the Vienna Neudorf volunteer fire brigade was also requested for support. As part of the rescue operation, the emergency services and the fire service medical service initiated resuscitation measures. Unfortunately, one of the two people could not be saved, while the second person was flown to a hospital in a critical condition. The incident also required provisional measures to seal the gas leakage.
Cause and measures
A closer look at the events shows that the gas leakage took place during construction work in a multi -party home. There, gas escaped from a natural gas line on the first floor. The owner informed the energy supply company about the leakage and tried in vain to temporarily close it. When it arrived, the emergency service found high natural gas values in the staircase, which led to the immediate alarm of the fire brigade. The emergency services carried out pressure ventilation of the staircase and several affected apartments to defuse the danger situation.
The house was cleared for precautionary reasons because there was a risk of explosion. An apartment had to be broken up by the fire brigade in order to promote the ventilation of the heavily affected areas. The entire use lasted over four hours before the last measurements were carried out by the energy supplier, which enabled residents to return to their apartments.
Security measures and emergency management
In emergencies like this, quick action is crucial. The most important emergency numbers should always be at hand. The fire brigade can be reached under emergency number 112, while the local gas supplier should be contacted immediately in an emergency or if a gas leakage is suspected. It is also advisable to have an emergency plan with relevant contacts - such as the family doctor or family member - in order to be able to act quickly in an emergency.
The fire brigade ended at around 11 a.m. after all the necessary measures for hazard have been taken. In total, more than 30 members of the Mödling and Wiener Neudorf fire departments and seven vehicles were deployed.
This incident underlines the importance of safety precautions and effective emergency management systems in order to be able to react quickly in critical situations. Further information on gas accidents and emergency management can be found on pages such as Sanitary Express.
