Franz Schuster Memorial: Young athletics defy the rain!

The International Franz Schuster Memorial took place in Schwechat on June 10, 2025 and attracted numerous young talents from home and abroad. The event is considered one of the most important youth athletics events in Austria and offers young athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The impressive number of participants illustrates the central role of the event in promoting young talent, both for the SVS (Sports Association Schwechat) and for the Austrian Athletics Association.

The Franz Schuster Memorial has been held at Schwechater Phönixsportplatz for 50 years and has developed into an international flagship event. Helmut Gerik, Vice President of SVS Athletics, emphasizes the historical significance of this event, which was always held despite numerous challenges, including the foot and mouth disease in 1976 and the corona pandemic. Numerous athletes from Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic were extremely pleased to take part in the event, which underlines the international appeal of the event.

Anniversary and tradition

This year's memorial, which traditionally takes place at Pentecost, was particularly festive. It marked the 50th anniversary of the event, which has continued to evolve over five decades. In previous years, top athletes such as Konrad Bukowiecki from Poland and Ivet Lalova from Bulgaria have joined, which illustrates the high quality of the competition. Then as now, the event is aimed particularly at U16 and U18 athletes and gives them the opportunity to prove themselves.

The deadline for entries for the competitions was May 25, 2022, and the announcement and schedule were available on the SVS athletics and ATHMIN websites. These measures show the organized structure behind the event, which ensures that everything runs smoothly and that the athletes are offered the best possible conditions.

Sustainable support for young sports

The Franz Schuster Memorial has established itself as an essential platform for promoting young sports and is valued not only by the athletes, but also by the coaches and officials. According to reports from NOEN and ÖLV the competition is an outstanding opportunity to develop the next generation of sports stars and train in a competitive environment.

Looking to the future, it is to be hoped that the Franz Schuster Memorial will continue to be such a springboard for talented athletes, while the entire athletics community in Austria continues to develop positively. The high level of motivation and commitment that is visible in this event is a great incentive for everyone involved.
