Eurofighter return to Klagenfurt - alert willingness until September 1!
On August 28, 2025, Klagenfurt again became the location for the temporary stationing of Eurofighter jets. This measure, which is already the fifth of its kind in Klagenfurt, primarily serves to relieve the tense personnel situation at the Hinterstoisser Fliegerhorst in Zeltweg. The three Eurofighers will have arrived in Klagenfurt on August 29th until lunchtime and will remain there until September 1st.
The Eurofighter are only intended for so-called "priority alpha" missions. These operations are required if there are unauthorized overflight of military machines in Austrian airspace or that there can no longer be reached civil aircraft that is unable to fly. In the meantime, training and practice flights are dispensed with during the stationing in Klagenfurt, which should optimize the operational readiness for the operations mentioned.
Background of the stationing
The current personnel situation at the air traffic controllers in Zeltweg is tense. The airspace surveillance due to the Eurofighter has failed on a daily basis since November 2024. In order to counteract this situation, parts of the Eurofighter fleet were temporarily moved to Linz. The reverting of the Eurofighter to Zeltweg is already planned for September 1st, with further similar stationations in the prospect in the current year.
The Eurofighter are housed at Klagenfurt Airport in the Hangar of the Glock company. During this laying, two machines are used as alarm rotting, while the third serves as a reserve. A first successful test operation in Klagenfurt took place in April 2025, where the Eurofighter were stationed for the first time at this location. The latest developments show that the Bundeswehr and the Ministry of Aviation continue to work on optimizing airspace surveillance.
The Eurofighter stationing in Klagenfurt therefore shows not only the flexibility of the emergency services, but also the urgency to ensure airspace monitoring in Austria. The next missions are already around the corner, and those responsible hope that these measures can relieve the tense personnel situation at short notice.
