Eklat at the summit in Alaska: Putin faced, Trump is silent!
A historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Alaska today. The reason for which both heads of the state came together for a conversation is all about the Ukraine war and the geopolitical tensions that exist since the annexation of the Crimea in 2014. The still ongoing conflict has not only burdened relationships between Russia and the West, but also caused unrest worldwide.
Before the talks started, there was a scandal during a photo shoot. Journalists confronted Putin with critical questions about his war in Ukraine. A reporter loudly asked the question of how the USA could trust Putin's word at all and whether he would stop killing. Putin tried to drown out the critical inquiries and is said to have called "you are ignorant" according to a lip reader. Trump, who stood next to him, looked uncomfortable and whispered his concern to a consultant.
Course of the talks
Originally, no speeches were provided before the conversations, but the heated mood reflects the current geopolitical tensions. Putin had already been confronted with the question of whether he was ready to end the killing of civilians when he arrived in Alaska. The conversations themselves took 2 hours and 45 minutes and ended surprisingly early.
A joint press conference after the meeting did not provide any concrete statements about a possible ceasefire in the Ukraine War. While Trump spoke of agreements on important points, he did not give any specific details. Putin, in turn, only mentioned agreements that could serve as the starting point for a solution to the Ukraine conflict without revealing specific information. Trump emphasized that the war had to be ended and a deal was within reach.
Reactions and outlook
After the summit, both heads of state returned to their home countries. Trump commented in an interview with Sean Hannity from Fox News, in which he offered little clarity about the most important points of the meeting. However, he underlined that "quite significant points" have to be discussed and handed over the final negotiations to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and to European allies.
In the press conference, Trump kept no secret of the fact that responsibility was now at Selenskyj to conclude the negotiations. At the same time, he pointed out that the European nations also had to be involved in the process. The consideration of possible consequences such as sanctions shifted into the future to "two or three weeks". A trilateral meeting with him, Putin and Selenskyj could be in planning, and Trump finally advised Selenskyj: "Make the deal."
The developments around the summit in Alaska are of interest not only for the direct situation in Ukraine, but also with regard to Putin's political career, which is characterized by international tensions and domestic challenges. Should Putin pursue his goal of a long-term solution to the Ukraine conflict, this could have far-reaching consequences for stability in the region and for its own power base.
