In a shocking incident, a 38-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both criminal record, have been in front of the Schöffensenat in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) since Wednesday. They are accused of attacking and robbing a dog owner last autumn during a nightly walk. According to Krone, the 38-year-old pulled out a knife when the victim defended himself. As a result, the 40-year-old snatches the bag for the dog owner, which in addition to a wallet also contained ID documents and an ATM card, and escapes with the prey.
The explosive dynamics of the raid tightened when the defendant with the stolen ATM card took 2,000 euros from the victim's account, since he had noted his PIN number. The dog owner filed a complaint and identified the 40-year-old as his neighbor, whom he knows from the drug milieu. Monitoring camera recordings from the bank provided decisive evidence that the two accused show at the time of the crime. During the trial, the 40-year-old stated that she had already withdrawn money for the dog owner.
growing violent crime in Germany
This incident is part of a worrying trend. Violent crime in Germany has increased in recent years. In 2024, more than 217,000 violent crimes have been registered, the highest number since 2007. This emerges from data from the BKA, as https://de.statista.com/themen/11062/kriminalitaet-in-deutschland-waltkriminalitaet/). Violent crimes, which include murder, serious bodily harm, rape and robbery, make up less than 4 % of all police crimes, but they significantly influence the feeling of security of the citizens.
The increase in knife attacks is particularly alarming. According to the [Tagesschau, almost every fifth heavy attack with a knife is now carried out in Germany. Since 2023, society has experienced a 10 percent increase in dangerous bodily harm with knives compared to previous years. In Lower Saxony, too, the police show 8 knife attacks a day that this problem is worrying.
measures and outlook
In order to counteract this trend, the weapons law has been tightened since October 2024. Among other things, knife -free zones at event locations, train stations as well as in buses and trains were introduced. The authorities now also have the option of setting up a light weapon ban zones. Criminologist Britta Bannenberg sees these measures sensible in order to increase security in the main areas of crime, but she emphasizes that laws and controls do not offer a complete security guarantee.
In another worrying aspect, violence against rescue workers, which reached maximum stalls in 2023, manifests itself with around 2,740 acts of violence and around 3,970 victims. This increase can in fact be due to extreme situations and psychological stress. Society is increasingly concerned about violence and aggression against people from politics, police and emergency services, as a survey in May 2024 shows: 94 % of Germans regard this as a big problem.
The trial of the drug couple was postponed because the victim and another witness were not present. The continuation of the procedure is scheduled for the end of June. In the event of a guilty verdict, the accused threaten up to 15 years in prison due to their criminal record.
