Dramatic hours in Graz: Amo ride demands three fatalities!

Zweiglgasse, 8020 Graz, Österreich - In Graz, a tragic incident occurred in which a 26-year-old Austrian citizen used his vehicle as a weapon. The killing spree began in Zweiglgasse, where he killed a person and injured several more. Then he continued his journey across the Augarten bridge in Schönaugasse and then on to Jakominiplatz, where he targeted a garden in Herrengasse. The perpetrator was finally arrested by the police in Schmiedgasse. As a result, three people were found dead, and more than 30 people suffered injuries, including ten seriously injured and one person in critical condition, such as Graz.at

The large alarm led to 80 rescue vehicles and four rescue helicopters mobilized. During a press conference for the incident, Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer and Graz Mayor Siegfried Nagl expressed their dismay and expressed their sympathy for the relatives. The mayor, who himself was an eyewitness to the amocran, reported on the perpetrator's targeted approach. Police director Josef Klamminger mentioned possible psychological problems of the perpetrator as a motivation situation.

a new police concept

In response to the killing run, the “police intervention at amoclags” was put into practice in Graz. The police are pursuing the goal of immediately intervening in life -threatening operations, even if only smaller units are available. As described [Kleine Zeitung] (https://www.kleinezeitung.at/service/newsticker/chronik/19786026/amoclauf-in-graz-der-exekutive-warten-warten-warten, the executive has developed a three-stage intervention model:

  • First intervention by forces from the regulations.
  • Next wave by special forces (fast intervention group, SIG).
  • Third level: Use of the EKO Cobra.

The aim of these measures is to achieve the "rapid incapacity" of the perpetrator. Above all, the rapid intervention of the emergency services is crucial, since perpetrators in such locations often show a high willingness to use violence. Over 300 police officers were deployed, including 60 special forces of the Cobra and five helicopters.

psychological stress and support

The mental burden for the officials was extremely high. In order to ensure an exchange and aftercare for the emergency services, a system of "peers" for mental support was set up. This is particularly important because file such as that in Graz and the killing spree in Winnenden 2009 must have decided a new, quick procedure for missions. In 2017 and 2018, a “terrorist and amotlag manual” was also created, which includes rules of conduct for the population: fleeing, hiding, defending and emergency call. A crisis telephone for relatives and witnesses was also set up, whose telephone number 14844 is.
