Drunk driver causes chaos in Vienna favorites: injuries and property damage!
On the night of Sunday, August 31, 2025, a spectacular traffic accident occurred in Vienna-Favoriten. A 37-year-old driver who was under the influence of alcohol caused major damage on Raxstrasse. At around 1:00 a.m., the drunken man drove his vehicle along a sidewalk and drove into a park. There he collided with a bench before continuing his journey on Eschenallee.
The driver drove around a park bench on Eschenallee and hit two parked vehicles head-on. The violent impact sent a truck flying across the road. Despite the chaos, the person who caused the accident was uninjured, although his passenger was slightly injured. The alcohol test showed a level of 1.4 per mille, which is well above the legal limit of 0.5 per mille. Since the driver did not have a valid driving license, his driver's license could not be taken away, as Kleine Zeitung reports.
Drinking and driving: a serious problem in Austria
Drunk driving remains a serious problem in Austria. In 2024, 2,705 alcohol-related accidents resulting in personal injury were recorded, which represents a slight increase compared to 2023. These accidents accounted for over 7% of all road accidents resulting in personal injury, with tragically 30 people losing their lives and more than 3,000 injured. The legal regulations are clear: the maximum limit for blood alcohol content for drivers is less than 0.5 per mille. For probationary driving license holders as well as truck and bus drivers, the limit is even 0.1 per mille, according to ÖAMTC.
As statistics show, the consequences of drinking and driving are serious. Administrative penalties may be imposed in the event of a traffic stop with a blood alcohol level of less than 0.8. However, from 0.8 per mille, the driving license is revoked and traffic coaching is ordered. As the alcohol content increases, the penalties also increase significantly; Values of 1.6 per mille or more result in fines of between 1,600 and 5,900 euros and a driving license revocation of at least 6 months.
Special attention to the summer months
Experts from the Road Safety Board warn of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, especially in summer. In the first quarter of 2022, the proportion of alcohol-related accidents was 8.5%. In summer, especially in July and August, the numbers are above average, with almost a quarter of accidents occurring in these months. KFV appeals to road users to take personal responsibility and recommends thinking about safe routes home before consuming alcohol.
The incident in Vienna-Favoriten once again highlights the urgent need for responsible behavior on the roads and the dangers that alcohol brings with it. Whether as a driver or passenger, safety should always come first.
