Rail traffic paralyzed: Massive locks expected in summer 2025!

The summer of 2025 becomes a real test of patience for many passengers from the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Due to extensive construction work, ÖBB plans to completely stop train traffic on several routes between 28 and 30 June. This affects the connections between Vienna and Wolfsthal Airport and between Mistelbach and Laa on the Thaya. The closures are part of a larger construction project, which also includes the S7 airport carving and the Laaer Ostbahn by September 1st. These news will be reported by Exxpress.at.

In addition, a single -track company in several regions of Lower Austria will be necessary during the summer, including between German Wagram and Marchegg and in the Mödling - Leobersdorf and Wiener Neustadt section. In order to mitigate the effects of this construction work, ÖBB is planning a rail replacement traffic with buses for the affected routes.

effects on the timetable

passengers have to adjust to far -reaching changes in numerous lines. Among other things, the following connections are affected:

  • S1
  • r1
  • Rex1
  • s2
  • Rex2
  • s3
  • Rex3
  • s4
  • S7
  • Rex7
  • CJX9
There are also restrictions on the regional railway line S40, where the rail connection between Klosterneuburg-Weidling and St. Andrä-Wördern is not served while buses take on this service. All journeys of the R40 line between Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and St. Andrä-Wördern are also eliminated.

February to summer timetable

The construction work will not only affect the regional trains, but also have an impact on the S-Bahn in Vienna. There will be no S-Bahn between Praterstern and Floridsdorf during the summer, and here too a replacement of rails is set up with two bus lines. ÖBB tickets are also valid in the affected areas on subway and tram lines.

From June 28th to August 31st, the U4 is run in two sections due to construction work. Gleisern renovations on the Wiener Ring between June 16 and August 31 lead to cuts and diversions of lines D, 1, 2 and 71, and line 43 will also be affected. Another change affects line 6, which only runs on an alternative route between July 7 and August 22, while line 18 pauses during this period. The operation of line 37 will also be temporarily stopped between July 28th to August 14th.

Information for passengers

Passengers are encouraged to visit the ÖBB website in order to access current information about construction sites and changes in the timetable. These use a platform that also collects personal data, such as the IP address and device information, according to the regulations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The planned construction work is part of a large -scale project to improve infrastructure and driving safety. The implementation period extends over the summer months, which means that travelers are negatively affected by the restrictions on until August. Further details on the construction work and the associated changes in traffic can also be viewed on the website of the S-Bahn Berlin, which have some similar restrictions based on construction work.
