ASKÖ Mitternlern: Excellent as a model for health and movement!

The ASKÖ Mitterngern was awarded the prestigious table "Healthy Association" last Saturday. Health Councilor Beate Prettner presented the award and thus praised the association's commitment in the areas of movement, prevention and healthy cooperation. Prettner emphasized the importance of such initiatives for physical and mental health in the region.

The association offers a comprehensive program for all ages, which includes ball sports taster courses, tennis offers, movement camps for children and adolescents and polysportive courses for adults. A new Motoric Game Park will be integrated into the courses in order to promote enthusiasm for regular exercise in young and old. In addition, the “Healthy Association” initiative is supported by the health department, both financially and in terms of content.

health promotion through movement

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the positive effects of movement on health. According to a new WHO guide, movement not only improves mood, focus and concentration, but also protects against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and other non-transferable diseases. The WHO recommends adults to carry out physical activity per week at least 150 minutes. Dr. Kremlin Wickramasinghe, regional representative of the WHO for nutrition, obesity and movement, emphasizes the crucial role of sports associations in health promotion.

Over 615 million people in the EU are active in sports clubs, which has enormous potential to improve physical and psychological well -being. In addition, the WHO and the OECD report that an increase in physical activity in Europe can save up to EUR 8 million in purchasing power parities every year. Sports associations can therefore represent a driving force for health initiatives.

joint efforts for more movement

In March 2025, a follow -up event for the round table Movement and health took place in which institutions from the federal government, countries, municipal umbrella organizations and other areas took part. There were remarkable intermediate results for the implementation of the measures promised in the consensus paper, which include, among other things, improvements in the framework conditions and a stronger visibility of the topic of movement.

The participants of the round table collected ideas and developed numerous measures that are to be bundled in a planned network to promote movement in the future. This network will define priority fields of action and set a common focus to further advance the initiatives for health promotion. In this way, the dialogical exchange between different sectors is continued and streaked in order to achieve a positive change in movement promotion in the long term.

Overall, it can be seen that the combination of local initiatives such as the ASKÖ Middle Service and the overarching support measures on the part of the WHO and the health institutions form an important foundation to strengthen health promotion through movement.

The award of the ASKÖ Middle is an example of the numerous steps that are taken to move the population into a more active lifestyle that can make a decisive contribution to improving the quality of life. The recommendations and resources of the WHO offer a valuable basis for this.
