Nico Antonitsch, the 33-year-old Austrian soccer player and central defender, is drawing a line under his impressive career. In an emotional Instagram post he announced the end of his career on Sunday evening. The native of Vienna, who has been addicted to football since his childhood, thanked his companions in moving words and concluded with the heartfelt sentence: “Football, I love you”.
Antonitsch began his professional career at Union St. Florian in 2010 before moving to Kapfenberger SV in 2012. After stints at SV Horn, Ried and the OÖ Juniors, he ventured to Germany in 2017, where he demonstrated his skills at FSV Zwickau. He celebrated further successes at FC Ingolstadt and SV Elversberg, with whom he won the third division championship in the 2022/23 season laola1.at reported. Despite his last years as a club player without a contract, Antonitsch was able to point to a respectable record that includes a total of over 200 competitive games.

Before Antonitsch ended his professional career, he last played for the Israeli club Hapoel Petah Tikva, where he was left without a club after only 15 appearances in the summer of 2024.
