Hungary prohibition: Pride parades are no longer allowed to take place!

Budapest, Ungarn - In the heart of Europe, the LGBTQ+community is once again faced with violent restrictions. In Hungary, under the right-wing conservative leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Parliament decided to ban all pride parades on Tuesday. This ban was adopted in the urgent procedure with an overwhelming result from 137 yes to 27 no votes, as Kleine Zeitung . The legal basis of the ban is based on a newly inserted passage in the Assembly Act, which says that meetings are not allowed to violate child protection laws. Another worrying point is the threat of high fines for participants: inside, who take part in the parade despite the ban. The state even plans to use facial recognition software to identify the people.

The reason for the ban on the government are concerns from the government that the Pride parade is dangerous for children. A controversial regulation has been in Hungary since 2021, which severely limits the access of young people to information about non -heterosexual life forms. Official media and educational offers that treat such topics are not accessible to minors, which dramatically exacerbates the situation for LGBTQ+youth. Orbán itself had already indicated in February that there should be no organization for this year's Pride parade, since this was "wasted time and money", as The reaction to this decision was not long in coming. During the vote, members of the Opposition Party Momentum had a fire in the plenary hall and thus led to an interruption of the session. Afterwards, more than a thousand people in Budapest protested against the law, which even led to the temporary closure of a Danube bridge. The growing tensions and the measures of the Hungarian government throw a shadow on the basic human rights in Europe and question individual freedom.
