Waffenruhe in sight? The USA and Ukraine start talks in Saudi Arabia!

After a decisive meeting between Ukraine and the USA in Saudi Arabia, in which Ukraine agreed to a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, the pressure is now on Russia. US President Donald Trump rated the Ukrainian willingness as a "very important step" and announced that talks with Russian representatives should take place this week. This development could possibly pave the way for a permanent peace, as the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock explained, who described the result as a "turning point". The EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was also pleased to comment on the re-accepted US military aid and the initiative for ceasefire, emphasizing that "the ball was now in Russia". According to the vice chief of the Ukrainian Presidential Chancellery, Pawlo Palissa, the United States has resumed military aid without delay.

Russia's reaction to the ceasefire

In Moscow, on the other hand, the reactions initially remained cool. Foreign Office spokeswoman Maria Sacharova emphasized that Russia's position was not determined on the basis of foreign agreements. Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow made it clear that Russia would not accept NATO presence in Ukraine under any circumstances. In the meantime, the Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on new air strikes to the Ukrainian capital, whereupon Russian air defense systems collapsed 21 enemy drones without any significant damage. After the negotiations, a meeting between the United States and Russia will also be considered possible in the coming days, which further reinforces the international hopes for progress in the peace negotiations.
