International Jazz Festival Münster: A month full of musical highlights!

The International Jazz Festival Münster, which will present its concerts over a period of 30 days from January 6, 2025, focuses on the variety of contemporary jazz. The festival offers a total of 17 concerts with over 80 musicians from about 20 countries, such as WDR reported.

On Sunday, the tenor saxophonist Xhosa Cole will perform with his quartet. His program is entitled "Freemonk", which is a tribute to the compositions of the legendary pianist Thelonious Monk. Xhosa Cole is known to break with musical conventions, similar to how Monk once did.

Special concert with the quartet "Andrés Coll Odyssey"

Following Xhosa Coles appearance, the German premiere of the quartet "Andrés Coll Odyssey" follows. The band consists of 24-year-old Andrés Coll from Spain, who is the focus of the group as vibraphone and Marimba players. The other band members include:

  • Majid Bekkas (Morocco) - Guembri, Kalimba
  • Mateusz Smoczynski (Poland) - violin
  • Ramón López (Spain) - drums, tabla, known for his teaching of Indian music in Paris

The name "Odyssey" reflects the musical journey of the musicians. The recordings for the festival come from January 5, 2023 in the Great House of Theater in Münster, under the moderation of Thomas Mau and the editorial team of Markus Heugen.

XHOSA COLE will also present his third album "On a Modern Genius Vol. 1" as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival in Kings Place. This album celebrates the compositions of Thelonious Monk and the "Freemonk" project reinterprets its works, as EFG London Jazz Festival . Cole is accompanied by Pat Thomas (piano), Josh Vadivello (bass) and Peter Newman (drums), with guest appearances by Byron Wallen (trumpet) and Hans Koller (Euphonium).

Xhosa Cole has already received several awards, including the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2018 and the parliamentary Jazz Award for 'Best Newcomer' 2019. The musician is currently completing his studies at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire and is actively working in various writing and performance projects throughout the UK.
