The Wittmund Air Force Base is currently being modernized to make it one of NATO's most advanced horses of air, which has been planned since 2019. The extensive renovation measures are necessary because the existing infrastructure largely dates from the 1960s. From February, the starting and runway will be renewed, which made the move of the Eurofighter to Laage inevitable, as there is no flight operations during the renovation. The Bundeswehr has assured that all construction work is expected to be completed in 2024, which should enable the resignation of the air forces according to Wittmund.
