Asylum scandal in Austria: Kickl demands radical stops of migration!

In his recent speech, FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl calls for a radical stop of asylum policy in Austria. He criticizes the current strategy as a destruction of society and warns of fatal mistakes at EU level. Kickl explains that during his time as Interior Minister in 2018 and 2019, the number of asylums could be significantly reduced, which he considers as a success of the FPÖ. The politician also condemns every desired NATO accession as a break with the fundamental values of Austria and accuses other parties hypocrisy, while the FPÖ campaigns for national sovereignty.

Austria is currently classified as the most expensive welfare state in the world, which is shown in a social quota of 29.8 percent in 2025, according to the OECD data. This number reflects the high taxes that burden citizens. The expenditure for social benefits, pensions and health is continuously increasing due to an aging population, inflation and increasing unemployment. In this context, the budget deficit predicts growth to over 5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Current asylum statistics

Current statistics show that between January and August 2025 in Austria a total of 6,984 positive decisions were made in the field of asylum and subsidiary protection. This corresponds to a dramatic decline of 61 percent compared to the previous year and has been the lowest value since the beginning of 2021. The largest proportion of these positive decisions has been awarded Afghan, followed by Somalians and Syrians. Interestingly, children who make up 51 percent of all asylum applications are a significant demographic group in this context.

  • Positive Entscheidungen: 6.984 (Rückgang um 61 %)
  • Afghan/innen: 3.959
  • Somalier/innen: 885
  • Syrer/innen: 751
  • Asylanträge insgesamt im August 2025: 11.622 (Rückgang um 32 %)

The majority of applications, 34 percent, were eliminated asylum seekers, while 25 percent Syrians were. A considerable proportion of applications was due to family reunions or multiple applications. In total, only 39 percent of the applications from newly traveled asylum seekers were original.

Measures to contain illegal migration

In a further context, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasizes that numerous measures to sustainably contain illegal migration in Austria were taken. The assembly of illegal migrants fell by around 95 percent compared to previous years, and asylum applications also reduced by around 37 percent, which is above the EU trend. A remarkable result is that Austria only records 2.3 percent of the asylum applications made in the EU.

The emphasized politics leads to a drastic reduction in illegal migration and focuses on pressing it for zero. Intensive border controls and the compressed enforcement of the asylum procedures are central elements of this strategy, which also includes the introduction of an obligation to work for asylum seekers.

These comprehensive developments in asylum and migration policy not only reflect the current challenges, but also the goals and measures that the government pursues to regain control of migration and integration processes.
