Onset of winter in Bavaria: First snow causes traffic chaos!
Winter has hit Germany with full force! On Wednesday evening, heavy snowfall turned Bavarian streets into slippery slides. The fire department had to intervene on a country road to ensure traffic safety. The first winter flakes caused traffic delays while temperatures plummeted.
A light blanket of snow spread over parts of Germany on Thursday night. The foothills of the Alps in particular experienced their first winter magic when a thin layer of snow decorated the landscape. According to a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD), the snow depth in the affected regions was mostly in the single digits, with up to eight centimeters of fresh snow in the Weilheim-Schongau district. Garmisch-Partenkirchen recorded three centimeters, while the peaks of Brauneck and Zugspitze are covered with an impressive 14 centimeters.
Snow in Baden-Württemberg and on the Brocken
The first snow also fell in Baden-Württemberg! The Swabian Alb and the Allgäu were particularly affected, where one to two centimeters of snow was measured from an altitude of 650 to 750 meters. There was also light snowfall in Ehingen, at an altitude of 594 meters. But the Feldberg was spared and recorded no fresh snow.
The Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains, experienced its first snowfall on Wednesday morning. Frosty temperatures caused hoar frost and gave the region a wintry feel. The weather forecast doesn't promise any improvement in the coming days either, with cloudy skies and fog. So anyone planning to explore the winter landscape should dress warmly and be prepared for slippery conditions!
