Rhein-Neckar Air files for bankruptcy – managing director remains optimistic!
Rhein-Neckar Air GmbH, the last independent regional airline in Germany, has filed for bankruptcy at the Mannheim District Court! The reason? An unpaid invoice from a tour operator in the “mid five-figure range,” as managing director Dirk Eggert confirmed to SWR. Despite this alarming news, Eggert remains optimistic and plans to maintain flight operations. The popular Mediterranean island of Elba is particularly on the agenda, with flights to it twice a week!
Challenges caused by pandemic and competition
Originally founded to enable business trips from Mannheim City Airport to Berlin, Rhein-Neckar Air is struggling with enormous challenges. The corona pandemic has not only led to flight bans, but has also increased the decline in business travel. Added to this is the pressure from larger airlines and the increased fees at the new capital airport BER, which further exacerbated RNA's financial difficulties.
Despite the bankruptcy, interest in flights to the Mediterranean island of Elba remains unbroken! This destination was only added to the offer in May of this year and the response was overwhelming. Eggert plans to focus on the charter business to continue operations. Discussions with the provisional insolvency administrator are scheduled this week to find a solution to the financial problems. Eggert remains confident that the tour operator's bill will be paid and that passengers will not have to suffer from the current situation. The coming weeks are crucial for the future of Rhein-Neckar Air!
