Price increase for mobile phone tariffs: It will be that expensive from April 2025!
Austrian consumers must adapt to increasing costs for cell phone and internet tariffs. From April 1, 2025, more than half of the mobile phone tariffs and around 90 percent of internet contracts will be around 2.9 percent more expensive, as the telecommunications provider "Spusu" reports. These price increases are the result of so -called value security clauses that are linked to the consumer price index (VPI). There was almost eight percent in the previous year, and since 2020 the VPI has increased by 27.1 percent. A tariff with a basic fee of 30 euros will increase to around 30.90 euros due to the upcoming adjustment.
The price increases vary in various providers. While A1 is planning an increase of 2.9 percent, the provider "three" decided not to increase prices due to inflation below the defined threshold, as reported by "futurezone". The situation is different with Magenta, where an increase of 2.91 percent is provided for for funding contracts. Consumers who have a tariff bound to the entire VPI experience continuous price increases, which for many the consideration of changing the provider. According to "Spusu", this step could be advantageous for many, since the current tariffs can often be replaced by lower price models.
consumer price index as a scale
The consumer price index is an essential parameter for measuring general price development in Austria, as “Statistics Austria” states. It provides information about inflation, which is usually shown as a percentage change compared to the same period last year. The VPI is recorded through the price observation of various goods and services contained in an average shopping cart. In Germany, a harmonized consumer price index (HVPI) is also created to enable internationally comparable inflation rates, as the Federal Statistical Office explains.
The rising tariffs are likely to face many Austrians with challenges, especially since the cost of living has increased continuously in recent years. It is all the more important to keep an eye on the development of the consumer price index and to react to market offers at an early stage. The price increase urgently shows that consumers increasingly have to pay attention to the pricing of their contracts in order to avoid financial burdens.
