The Lower Saxony State Mountain Office has finally given the long -awaited green light for the dismantling of the Gorleben salt stick! This controversial exploration mine in Wendland, which has been in discussion as a potential nuclear waste company for years, is now being dismantled step by step.

On Friday, the main operating plan was approved for filling the salt stick, as a spokesman for the Landesbergamt announced to the NDR Lower Saxony. The Federal Company for Final storage (BGE) has already announced that the work will begin soon. A special company will carry out a test mill in the coming week on the Salzhalde. Around 400,000 tons of rock salt must be removed and transported back into the pits, tunnels and shafts via conveyor belts. The filling should start on November 28th!

Opponentpushed for the dismantling of Gorleben

The Salzstock Gorleben had been traded as a possible nuclear waste endage for many years, but in autumn 2020 the BGE announced that the location was out of the question. Opponents of nuclear power have repeatedly demanded that the salt stick are filled up. Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Christian Meyer (Greens) has also spoken out for a rapid dismantling, which should be completed in early 2025 at the latest.
