Carnival in Cologne: Police increase security measures for celebrations!
The carnival start in Cologne on November 11th, 2024 will be a safety spectacle! The Cologne police are ready to protect the celebrations with an impressive contingent of around 1,400 police officers. In view of the worrying increase in knife attacks, the police have drastically increased their security measures. Under the direction of Police Director Frank Wißbaum, everything is done to ensure that the celebrants have a carefree and safe celebration.
Protective measures and controls
The security precautions are comprehensive: increased personal checks are carried out in the popular party areas such as the Zülpicher district and the old town. A new weapons ban, which has been in effect since October 31, prohibits the carrying of knives at public events. Wißbaum makes it clear: “If you want to celebrate, you don’t need a knife!” In addition, the police will be strategically present throughout the city to ensure security outside of the celebration zones.
Another focus is on the protection of minors. The police work closely with the youth welfare office to look after and protect young people who are heavily intoxicated. “Carnival is not a license to binge drink,” warns Wißbaum and emphasizes that preventative measures are being taken to prevent attacks. The police also give important tips for those celebrating to avoid pickpocketing and get home safely.
In addition, the synagogue in Cologne is receiving special protection due to the tense political situation. The police have implemented a proven security concept to avert possible dangers. With these measures, the Cologne police are doing everything they can to ensure that the start of the carnival is a peaceful and happy experience for everyone!
