Russia's new Ukraine talks: background and current attacks!
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Russia is planning a new round of talks with the USA in the fall. However, the desire of both sides to avoid a meeting without significant results causes delays in arranging an appointment. Ryabkov emphasizes the need to work behind the scenes to lay a foundation for future steps. These diplomatic efforts contrast with recent military escalations in Ukraine.
On Tuesday night, Russia again carried out massive attacks on Ukraine, resulting in significant casualties. According to Ukrainian information, at least 17 inmates were killed in an air strike on a prison in the Zaporizhia region alone. President Volodymyr Zelenskyj reported a total of 22 dead and 85 injured within one day. In the Zaporizhzhia region, military governor Ivan Fedorov reported eight attacks suspected to have been carried out with glide bombs, damaging both prison and private buildings.
Military escalations and their consequences
The situation is compounded by the fact that Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses are unable to reach the attacking Russian jets. This results in little warning time for the population. Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets described the attack on the prison as a war crime. Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak strongly condemned the attacks and called for military and economic consequences for Russia.
In addition, additional deaths due to Russian attacks were reported in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including two in the city of Kamianske. In total there were two more deaths in the Synelnykiwsky and Velykomychayliwska districts. In a compact phase, Russia also carried out an attack with 37 drones and two missiles, with 32 drones intercepted.
Global impact of the conflict
The war has massive global impacts and contributes to the polarization of the international system. The West is deeply involved through military, political and economic support for Ukraine. In addition, a support group has formed around Russia, with arms deliveries from Iran and North Korea playing an important role. According to reports, North Korean soldiers are directly participating in the fighting, which strengthens military cooperation between Russia and these states.
Russia's dependence on Iranian arms supplies has not only affected stability in the region, but also facilitated Tehran and Pyongyang's access to Russian nuclear weapons technology. International energy markets and global food security remain at risk from the conflict. The collapse of economic relations between Russia and the West has also had lasting changes in international trade. Russia seeks to strengthen international structures in which the West is not represented, which in the long term weakens the UN and other institutions of the international order that emerged after the Second World War.
Amid this tense situation, it remains to be seen whether the planned talks between Russia and the USA can lead to de-escalation or whether the military conflict in Ukraine and the corresponding global effects will continue to grow.
