Foot and mouth disease: Brandenburg stops animal transport for 72 hours!

In Brandenburg, the alarm among the authorities has increased due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. From today, January 11, 2025, animal transport is prohibited throughout the state for 72 hours. Various animal species are affected, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and camelids, which include camels, alpacas and llamas.

The emergency regulation was issued by the State Economics Minister Hanka Mittelstädt (SPD). The outbreak occurred in a water buffalo herd in Hönow, which is near the Berlin city limits. This marks the first outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Germany in approximately 35 years. The virus itself is harmless to humans.

Protective measures and further steps

In order to protect the animals and prevent the disease from spreading, the zoo and animal park in Berlin will remain closed for the time being. A crisis team from the Märkisch-Oderland district discussed how to proceed together with Agriculture Minister Mittelstädt. However, there is currently still uncertainty about the exact extent of the disease and how it is transmitted news.de and tagesspiegel.de reported.
