Dreesen leaves DFL: surprise after Bayern contract extension!
Shock for the football world: Jan-Christian Dreesen, who recently celebrated his contract extension with FC Bayern, is surprisingly withdrawing from the DFL presidency!
In an unexpected turn of events, the 57-year-old Dreesen, who was part of the DFL committee for more than eight years, announced his resignation on Friday. “After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position on the DFL Presidium,” he explained. The reasons? The enormous demands as CEO of FC Bayern Munich and his international obligations as deputy chairman of the European Club Association (ECA) require his “full attention”.
Who will be Dreesen's successor?
Despite his resignation, FC Bayern will continue to be represented on the DFL executive committee. The club is proposing its CFO Michael Diederich as Dreesen's successor. This could mean an exciting turnaround for the league as Diederich could bring a breath of fresh air and new perspectives. Dreesen, who has been at FC Bayern since 2013 and replaced Oliver Kahn in May 2023, only announced his contract extension until 2027 on Monday.
But not everything was calm around Dreesen. Reports of disagreements and criticism of him, particularly after an incident in which he allegedly threw a magazine at an employee, caused a stir. There was also dissatisfaction within the DFL's control committee, which revolves around the Bundesliga's failed media rights deal. Dreesen was involved in the decision, which now has to be repeated due to a legal dispute with DAZN. The football world is looking forward to the coming developments!
