The digital treasure of the diocese: Gundecarianum now online!

One of the most impressive medieval manuscripts, the pontifical Gunde carianum, is now finally accessible online! This masterpiece from the diocese of Eichstätt is seen as "the most extensive medieval handwriting of its kind" and offers a deep insight into the liturgical texts and the history of the diocese. Its origin dates back to the 11th century when it started by Gundekar II (1019-1075), a once important shepherd. In the more than 600 years after, the work was expanded by its successor and is therefore a true archive of episcopal history, enriched with magnificent miniatures that make the work unmistakable. Even centuries ago, despite intensive use, the manuscript has been surprisingly well preserved, which proves its color and beauty of the illustrations. Now the public has the opportunity to experience the GundeKarianum in full splendor and free of charge on the Internet, such as diocese Eichstätt reported.

This digital availability was made possible by collaboration with the Eichstätt diocesan archive with the library of the Catholic University of Eichstätt. Dr. Heike Riedel, the head of the Department of Historical Stocks, emphasizes the importance of this project that was realized within a year. This online platform not only opens up access to this cultural treasure to the general public, but also expands the possibilities of studying originals that are otherwise difficult to access. Forget the arduous path to the Altmühltal! The Gundekarianum has now taken its place alongside other important works of science and art, such as the famous Hortus Eystettensis. Interested parties can now browse the digital collection on the website of the Eichstätter University Library, such as Katholische Archive informed.
