Prison scandal in Augsburg: Minister Eisenreich breaks his silence!
Munich taz | A prison scandal shakes Augsburg! Last weekend, alarming details came to light that the Bavarian judiciary tested. Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU) broke his silence and confirmed that his ministry had been informed about the serious allegations for a year. "The dimension of the incidents may have been underestimated," said Eisenreich, who commented on a press conference on Thursday.
The focus of the controversy is an email from a former doctor of the Augsburg-Gablingen correctional facility, who denounced massive grievances in the "particularly secure detention rooms" (BGHS). Inmates were accommodated there under inhumane conditions - sometimes several days or even weeks without adequate care. Reports on physical abuse and brutal treatment of the inmates cause horror. "Naked in dark cellar rooms, without a ceiling and mattress," said the shocking statements by former prisoners and witnesses.
Investigations and measures
The public prosecutor has already started investigations and initial measures were taken. Eisenreich imposed a ban on entering all employees who are suspected, and the deputy head of the institution was suspended from the service. The head of the institution, against which there are no allegations, was also released as a precaution. A new provisional deputy now takes over the management of the prison.
In order to clarify the situation and prevent future incidents, a cross -departmental task force was set up in the Bavarian Ministry of Justice. This should take care of the internal processing and ensure that complaints will be statistically recorded in the future in order to recognize abnormalities faster. Eisenreich emphasizes that special complaints must be forwarded directly to him. The processing of these frightening incidents is top priority!
