Farewell to the Münster Cathedral: Bishop Genn takes stock after 16 years
Bonn/Münster, March 10, 2025 - an important chapter ends in the history of the Catholic Church in Germany: Bishop Felix Genn, after 16 years at the head of the Diocese of Münster, was ceremoniously adopted. The solemn service in St. Paulus-Dom took place on the occasion of its 75th birthday, which is the age limit for bishops. Pope Francis accepted Genn's withdrawal offer directly from the hospital, as the German Bishops' Conference confirmed.
At the moving ceremony, numerous bishops and church representatives paid tribute to Felix Genn, who had previously also managed the dioceses of Essen and Trier. Bishop Georg Bätzing praised Genn's clear beliefs and his humor, who made him a formative figure in the German Bishops' Conference. Genn had always campaigned for people and maintained an open -minded pastoral care that made the spiritual accompaniment of the believers their reality of life, as was emphasized in the speeches. The outgoing bishop had called for endurance and hope in his sermon in view of the current challenges for the church.
