ATM incident in Brunn: perpetrators flee on a scooter without loot!
On the night of June 20, 2025, an ATM was blown up in Brunn am Gebirge in the Mödling district, Lower Austria. The incident occurred at approximately 2:54 a.m. As [5min](https://www.5min.at/5202506200923/bankomat- Sprengung-in-noe-taeter-fluechten-auf-roller-ohne-beute/) reports, two unknown perpetrators were involved in the incident, but fled without loot on a black scooter. There was significant damage to the interior of the ATM, while the material damage to the surrounding premises is considered to be minor.
The Lower Austria police immediately launched an alarm search, which has so far been unsuccessful. The investigation was taken over by the State Criminal Police Office, theft department. A crime scene group secured traces at the scene. In particular, the circumstances of the perpetrator's escape arouse the interest of the police authorities. Officials are asking the public for help and to point out that the getaway vehicle may have been abandoned within a two to three kilometer radius.
Investigations and clues
Police have raised the possibility that the perpetrators may be connected to other ATM blasts. As [Kurier](https://kurier.at/chronik/niederoesterreich/noe-bezirk-moedling-nachrichten-polizei-bankomat Sprengung/403051467) reports, the getaway vehicles, such as the black scooter, could often be left behind near the crime scene. Citizens who discover an abandoned scooter are urged to notify the police and not alter it. Information can be directed to the State Criminal Police Office on 059133-30-3333.
When looking at past incidents, it should be noted that by the beginning of March 2023 there had already been 14 ATM explosions in Austria, with a particular focus on Vienna and Lower Austria. The perpetrators often escaped with cash, and there have been further explosions in Klagenfurt and Vienna-Leopoldstadt since the beginning of 2023. Experts consider the current group of perpetrators to be “simpler, less conspicuous and quicker” [Kurier](https://kurier.at/chronik/oesterreich/bankomat Sprengungen-polizei-banken-kuenstliche-intelligenz-sicherheitspakt-banken/403031341).
Security measures and new approaches
In response to the recurring ATM explosions, the Interior Ministry, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) and bank representatives have signed a security pact. This aims to strengthen surveillance measures and promote the use of artificial intelligence to prevent ATM explosions. According to BK director Andreas Holzer, these measures are already having an effect and safety concerns about possible injuries to residents are being taken increasingly seriously.
Authorities are aware of the risk posed by such crimes, especially since ATMs are often located in residential areas. Banks are planning increased security measures to protect both customers and employees. Creating a joint effort between security forces and banks could be the key to combating this crime.
