Digital patient files 2025: This is how your health will be revolutionized!

Starting next year, digital healthcare in Germany will be revolutionized: the introduction of the electronic patient record (ePA) is imminent. According to AOK Bayern, all insured people in statutory health insurance companies automatically have access to the ePA. This innovative solution stores all important medical data digitally and enables a transparent overview of the patient's health status. Bernd Ruppert, director of AOK Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu, emphasizes that patients retain sovereignty over their data and can decide for themselves who can see what information. In addition, tedious paperwork is no longer necessary because all documents are centralized and stored in an orderly manner in a digital location, which significantly simplifies the exchange between patients and doctors.

Data security guaranteed

The security of data is the focus of the ePA. AOK assures that the data is highly encrypted and stored on German servers. Doctors only have access to treatment procedures, and only if the electronic health card is used. Critical security measures ensure that unauthorized persons do not have access to sensitive health data. This was ensured, among other things, through penetration tests in which simulated hacker attacks were successfully repelled. The AOK itself also has no access to the data; this is not technically possible, how aok.de reported. Using two-factor authentication in the app also increases protection against unauthorized access, comparable to the security of banking apps.

The ePA remains optional. Insured persons can choose whether they would like to use digital support. This not only makes health information easier to access, but also has the potential to have life-saving effects in emergencies. Despite its voluntary use of the ePA, the AOK informs that without it, important historical treatment data could be more difficult to access, which could lead to delays. From 2025, however, the use of this modern form of health record will become the standard for everyone who wants to actively use digital progress in healthcare wir-sind-kaufbeuren.de.
