Record Januar 2025: Europe experiences the highest temperature ever!

Reading, Vereinigtes Königreich - January 2025 is recorded as the warmest January in history! According to a shocking report by the European climate change Copernicus, the global average temperature was astonishing 13.23 degrees Celsius - that is a whopping 1.75 degrees above the pre -industrial level. Samantha Burgess from the European Center for medium-term weather forecast (EZMW) describes this month as "surprising", especially against the background of the La-Niña conditions that usually have cooling effects. This extremely hot weather continues the alarming record temperatures that have been registered in the past two years, the Krone .

But that's not all! In addition to the heat, January 2025 also brought exorbitant rainfall, which were largely above average in large parts of Western Europe, Scandinavia and even in Italy. These heavy rains led to sudden floods in some regions, which also tightened the situation. In the communication of the Copernicus climate change service it becomes clear that the sea surface temperature in January at 20.78 degrees is the second highest number ever measured, right behind January 2024. This shows an alarming trend: January 2025 was the 18th month in 19 months, in which the temperature was at least 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial level, like Welt notes.

Despite these heated developments, the 1.5 degree goal of the Paris climate agreement remains on paper, since the evaluation takes place over longer periods. The last twelve months were 1.61 degrees above the average from 1850 to 1900. Nevertheless, there are international discrepancies, so that other data records do not always confirm these extreme temperature changes. However, climate change is unequivocally and the alarm bells ring out loud! The coming months could bring further surprising developments.
