Trump threatens: USA could reclaim control over Panama Canal!

In a political discussion, the designated US President Donald Trump recently threatened to reclaim control over the Panama Canal. At a right-wing conservative conference in Arizona, Trump provocatively asked the question: "Has anyone ever heard of the Panama Canal here?" To underline his argument that the United States is treated unfairly. He criticized the fees raised by Panama as "ridiculous and extremely unfair" and demanded that the United States had to be "treated fairly". Trump made it clear that the United States would only reclaim the channel "completely, quickly and without question", the principles of the "Greater Gesture of Giving" should not be taken into account, as he put it on its Truth Social platform.

The Panama reaction was not long in coming. President José Raúl Mulino rejected the threat with emphasis and explained in a video address that "every square meter of the Panama Canal" belongs to the country and was "not negotiable". The fees raised by Panama are customary in the market and were based on the size and tonnage of the passing ships. Mulino assured that these fees are "determined in a public and public hearing" and does not correspond to arbitrary acts, as Trump claimed. Mulino also shared this via the short message service X.

Trump warns of China

In his statements, Trump also warns of China's potential influence on the canal. He emphasized that he would not be told that the channel falls into "false hands", and made it clear that the transfer of control to Panama was once a sign of cooperation, not for the benefit of others. The Panama Canal is an essential trading route that is used to handle around 2.5 percent of the global sea deal. Every year, up to 14,000 ships pass the waterway, which is of central importance for the US imports of goods such as cars and liquid gas from Asia, as well as vice

In the past,

Trump has brought into play the takeover of a foreign territory when he tried to buy Greenland in 2019, which was answered by Denmark with a clear no. The current outbreak shows that Trump continues to have an interest in foreign matters, with his statements remind of the historical tensions between the USA and Panama. The trade and strategic use of the Panama Canal will continue to be the focus of US politics, while the internationally recognized agreements for the control of the canal and the right of Panama are questioned for sovereignty here.
