Sudan drone attack: 75 dead and the greatest humanitarian crisis!

In the middle of the escalating conflict in Sudan, the humanitarian conditions are catastrophic. It was recently reported that a drone attack on a mosque in the country has requested at least 75 lives. The Sudan is located in the civil war between the army of military ruler Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary militia Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. This conflict, which has been going on since April 2023, has once again drawn attention to the massive humanitarian crisis in the country. According to the UN, tens of thousands of people have already been killed in this civil war and over 14 million were violently driven out. Both parties to the conflict are suspected of having committed war crimes, and the situation has led the UN to describe Sudan as the largest humanitarian crisis area worldwide, even the crisis in Gaza ( Small newspaper,, Rundschau Online ).

The countries of Nord-Darfur and Kordofan are particularly badly affected. In El Fascher, the capital of Nord-Darfur, the food supplies are exhausted and the supply routes are blocked. It is estimated that around 40% of children in this region suffer from acute malnutrition, and more than every tenth child is in a critical condition. The general food uncertainty in Sudan affects almost half of the population, which means that around 25 million people are dependent on food aid. It is estimated that around two million people are acutely threatened by hunger ( bpb ).

Ethnic tensions and violence

The civil war has also accepted ethnic dimensions. UN Menschen Rights Commissioner Volker Türk warned of an "increasing ethnicization of the conflict". Reports on ethnic cleansing, especially against the Masalite people in West-Darfur, have accepted alarming proportions. The RSF is often accused of ethnic violence, with reports on sexual violence against women and girls and the recruitment of child soldiers repeatedly appear. Observers reported massive human rights violations, while health care in Sudan is severely restricted and lack of medication and medical care. Maker outbreaks and cholera epidemic represent additional dangers, especially for malnourished children ( Rundschau Online,, bpb ).

So far, the international community has insufficiently dealt with the conflict and there have been several failed attempts to achieve an armistice. Reports show that the Sudanese government has rejected a proposal from the United States and Arab countries for an armistice citing its sovereignty. External states such as Egypt, Iran and the VAE also interfere with the conflict, support different groups and thus tighten the instability ( Small newspaper,, bpb ).

Overall, the civilian population in Sudan face enormous challenges. The ongoing violence and the failure of the political actors to create stable conditions make hope for peace in the region wan. The international community urgently needs to take measures to improve humanitarian aid and to promote sustainable peace before the situation becomes even more critical ( Rundschau Online,, bpb ).
