Breaked up cigarette machine in Vienna - was it vandalism or theft?

In the night of Sunday, February 24, 2025, unknown perpetrators shocked the Viennese neighborhood in Floridsdorf with a spectacular explosive mission. A cigarette machine was detonated on the outer facade of a transformer on the Trillerpark/Brünner Straße. This machine, which could only be paid by credit card and had no cash subject, turned out to be an absurd goal for the vandals. The police were alerted around 5.15 a.m., but the motivation behind this senseless action remains unclear. Was pure rage of destruction acted or the perpetrators may have intended to steal something, shit their own lack of research? The investigators of the fire group of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, North Funeral Office, have started the investigations, while a search in the nearby area was without result, as police spokeswoman Anna Gutt reported, so that the perpetrators are still at large.

vandalism or theft?

The bizarre decision to break a machine that contained no cash and only accepted credit card payments, raises questions and causes a shake of the head in public. One might think that such acts result from an extreme desire for attention or pure stupidity. The police initially have no clear indications of whether the incident from vandalism was motivated or whether the perpetrators were actually interested in an unattainable profit. As tirol.orf.at , the security awareness in the community must be sharpened, even if the focus should not be on further effects or fears.
