Nursing nightmare in Vienna: 82-year-old victim of sexual violence by nurses!
On September 18th, a serious case of sexual violence in a care facility became known in the Vienna area. An 82-year-old pensioner suffering from dementia was forced into sexual acts by her carer, 26-year-old Afghan Sarafaz Z. The horrific incident was uncovered thanks to surveillance cameras installed by the woman's son out of concern for her safety. The surveillance made it possible to follow the crime live and quickly identify the perpetrator.
After the recordings were presented to the police, Sarafaz Z. was quickly arrested. The nurse is currently in custody and has made a confession. The psychological consequences of the crime are serious for the woman affected. According to her lawyer, she is suffering from severe trauma and has suffered permanent psychological damage. Her family expresses concerns about the 82-year-old's suicidal thoughts.
Reactions from the nursing association
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the supervising club reacted with little insight. The pensioner's son was asked to turn off the cameras so that he could continue to care for the mother. He was also informed that the nurse had the right to take legal action against him because the recordings had been made without his consent. This reaction has deeply shaken the family and appears to be aimed at shifting responsibility from the perpetrator to the son.
Unfortunately, incidents like this are not isolated. The issue of sexual abuse in care facilities is becoming increasingly pressing. According to a report from the Center for Quality in Care Foundation (ZQP), studies show that sexual violence in long-term care is a widespread but often taboo problem. Various research papers, including that of de Medeiros et al. (2008) and Eggert et al. (2023), address this issue and the need for preventive measures.
Sexual violence in nursing
Sexualized violence includes not only forced intimate contact, but also sexual suggestions and violations of privacy. In nursing, not only those in need of care but also nursing staff themselves are affected by sexual violence. The large number of studies, for example by Baker et al. (2016) and Malmedal et al. (2015) shows that the prevalence and types of abuse in residential facilities can vary.
In order to draw attention to this pressing problem, it is considered essential not to turn a blind eye to incidents. The ZQP has provided resources for this purpose and plans to publish relevant results on sexual violence in long-term inpatient care. Dealing with such incidents needs to be more open and proactive in order to help those affected and prevent future acts.
Given the current situation, the 82-year-old woman's family plans to switch to private care to ensure a safer and more secure living space for the retiree. The focus is now on processing the case and taking the necessary legal steps.
