Fraud in St. Veit: Romanian exchanges worthless ruble notes for euros!

A 34-year-old man from the St. Veit district was the victim of a money exchange fraud that took place at a bus stop on September 13, 2023. The perpetrator, a 24-year-old Romanian, approached the victim around 3:30 p.m. and pretended to be in distress. He explained that he was unable to fill up his car due to Belarusian banknotes not being accepted, as klick-kaernten.at reports. To help, the man handed over 155 euros and received two banknotes of 500 rubles each, which later turned out to be worthless.

After the transaction, the victim independently researched the value of the banknotes and discovered that the Romanian's claims were not true. He then filed a police report, which led to the investigation. The police were able to determine a possible connection with a similar fraud in the Patergassen area, as also mentioned by meinbezirk.at.

Investigation and arrest

Based on the investigation, the police identified the 24-year-old suspect and took him into custody. He was taken to the Villach police detention center and will be reported to the Klagenfurt public prosecutor. This highlights the need for effective security measures, as such forms of fraud are not uncommon in digital payment transactions. According to a study by pwc.de, financial service providers need to better prepare for such fraud attempts.

In particular, the developments related to PSD 3 (Payment Service Directive 3) and the PSR (Payment Service Regulation) set higher demands on the security measures that financial service providers have to implement for their customers. Customers are called up to regularly check their account sales and to find out more about different fraud forms.

Preventive measures

The study emphasizes that educational campaigns should be specifically adapted to different age groups in order to raise awareness of fraud risks. The implementation of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence for fraud detection, also plays a central role. Financial service providers may not only offer fast response times, but should also implement real-time fraud detection systems to combat fraud in digital payment transactions.

The events in St. Veit are a stark reminder of how important it is to be vigilant in this day and age and take the right measures to protect yourself from fraud.
