32 million euros for innocently condemned: Kristin Lobato's fight!
Kirstin Lobato, who spent 16 years innocently in prison, now receives a recruitment of over $ 34 million (approx. 32 million euros). A court in the US state of Nevada decided on December 14, 2024 in her favor and confirmed that the Las Vega's police had fake evidence in order to incorrectly accused Lobato of the murder of a homeless man, Duran Bailey. Lobato, now 41 years old, expressed her relief and joy after the judgment: "It was a hard struggle with many, many obstacles. I am glad that it is finally over," like rtl.de reported. It was not released from prison until the end of 2017, especially after the Innocence Project.
The shattering case
The allegations against Lobato ran on manipulated evidence after being interrogated by the police without a legal representation in 2001. There were neither physical evidence nor eyewitnesses that they could connect with the murder. Rather, the "investigation" was based on false confessions and pressure by the investigators. Her lawyer made it clear that the officials of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were held responsible for their machinations in the Lobato case, while the court found that they were deliberately presenting false evidence to cover up their own failures, such as oe24.at reported.
Although Lobato is now being paid for with enormous compensation, she spoke openly about her uncertainty as far as the future is concerned. "I have no idea what the rest of my life will look like," she admitted. The shock of having spent almost two decades of her youth in prison weighs heavily, and despite the financial compensation, the question remains open whether the psychological damage can ever be completely healed. Her story is seen as an impressive example of malfunctions in the judiciary and the need for reforms in law enforcement.
