In a dramatic keynote speech, Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) takes a stand against the power of social networks and the “algorithms” associated with them after Donald Trump moved back into the White House. In clear words, he called for stricter regulation by the European Union to counteract the spread of “fake news”. Habeck directly attacked X, formerly known as Twitter, and its owner Elon Musk, a prominent Trump supporter.
Chancellor candidate Habeck stated that control over public discourse should not be in the hands of tech billionaires like Musk or Chinese software. The influence of algorithms is seen as a threat that could manipulate social opinion. Therefore, a rigorous application of the European legal norm against platforms such as X and TikTok is necessary.
Algorithm war and political attacks
Although Trump's triumph has stirred up discussions on Musk's financial support for Trump pushed the tech tycoon to the top of the donor field and could earn him a political role in Trump's administration.
The escalating dispute is also reaching the political stage in Germany. FDP vice-president Wolfgang Kubicki sharply counters Habeck's demands by emphasizing on X that the democratic discourse should not be directed by Habeck and his officials. Discussions about social media regulations continue to simmer, especially in the wake of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which is in force in the EU to delete content that is not criminally relevant. The implementation by the Federal Network Agency and organizations such as “RESpect!” for public criticism, as the criteria are sometimes viewed as unclear and sometimes contradict the Basic Law.
