Summit of the Shanghaier Organization: Putin and modes strengthen alliances!
On August 31, 2025, the summit of the Shanghaier Organization for Cooperation (SOZ) in Tianjin, China. State and government heads of the member states first meet for joint discussions, followed by bilateral meetings. One of the highlights is a planned exchange between Russia's President Vladimir Putin and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is traveling to China for the first time after seven years.
Putin, who will also negotiate with China's head of state Xi Jinping in Beijing on September 2, stays in China to take part in a military parade for the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II. In the evening (local time), a press conference with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi will take place, in which a joint explanation of the SOZ members is expected after the 25th meeting of this kind.
Unity and stability in focus
At the summit, XI Jinping called up the member states to show unity in times of global instability and uncertainty. He emphasized the responsibility of the SOZ for peace and stability in the region and pointed out that the organization, which was founded 24 years ago, was originally launched to combat terrorism and economic cooperation. Ten countries are currently part of the SOZ: Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Pakistan, Iran (since 2023) and Belarus (since 2024).
The SOZ is considered a counterweight to western alliances, but has often had difficulties in the past to find a uniform position in conflicts. Critics underline that in addition to the official agenda, unofficial goals, such as the containment of the US influence and prevent revolutions, also play a role.
Growing relationships between India and China
For modes, which travels to China with a resentment via a trade dispute, the journey is of particular importance. The US tariffs on Indian imports have been increased to 50% since the oil transactions with Russia. Despite the decades of argument about the Himalayan region and military conflicts in 2020, India is interested in an approximation in China. In their conversations, modes and XI emphasize the partnership and the need for closer cooperation.
The summit in Tianjin should not only demonstrate the strength of the SOZ, but also serve as a platform for exchange about common economic interests and trade questions, especially since many members with the USA have trade disputes.
The SOZ, which represents around 40% of the world's population, pursues fundamental goals such as strengthening trust among the Member States and the guarantee of peace and security in the member regions. The organization has played a central role in the geopolitical landscape since it was founded in 2001 and is always seen as a powerful instrument in international politics. However, observers emphasize that the SOZ has no solid basis for a long-term unit, as expert Claus Soong from the Mercator Institute for China Research note.
The developments in the summit could thus have far -reaching effects on future relationships between the member states and the global balance of power could form.
