Food for the soul: Why regional food remains just a wish
Consumers' love for local food is undeniable. Surveys regularly show that Austrians value local products. Supermarkets emphasize their commitment to regional goods to strengthen their image. But the reality is different than the desire for regional diversity. Both retailers and restaurateurs are increasingly turning to cheap imported goods instead of relying on local products. The political appeals to show more patriotism in nutrition largely go unheard.
It is an unfortunate development that the preference for regional food does not always match what is available. The trend towards importing food shows that Austrian products are becoming increasingly less important. This discrepancy between consumers' desire for regionality and the actual offer from abroad raises questions about the sustainability and independence of domestic food supplies.
