Scholz asks a question of trust: New elections in the Bundestag are imminent!
Schloss Bellevue, 10557 Berlin, Deutschland - Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will contact the Bundestag with a decisive examination question. He intends to ask the question of trust in order to promote a new election of the Bundestag on February 23, 2025. This is done a good three years after taking office and in the context of a very turbulent political situation that developed after the dismissal of FDP finance minister Christian Lindner and the subsequent end of the traffic light coalition. Scholz now leads a minority government of the SPD and the Greens, which does not have a sufficient majority in parliament, which means that an approval of his request for trust is considered extremely unlikely. OE24 reports that Scholz has to expect the necessary 367 votes.
In the event of an expected rejection, the Chancellor will drive to the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier immediately after the meeting in Bellevue to propose the dissolution of the Bundestag. According to the current status, Steinmeier has already signaled that he agrees to the desired date for the new elections on February 23. According to Zeit , the president will decide within 21 days whether he agrees to the proposal and set the new elections within 60 days. It is interesting that the SPD and its 207 MPs want to pronounce the Chancellor, while the Green Group recommended to its 117 members to contain the voice to avoid that Scholz reached a majority by other voices, for example from the AfD.
