Political chaos in South Korea: President Yoon under fire!

The South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is in the most severe political crisis of his term. After the surprising proclamation of the war law on Tuesday, which was lifted again hours later, he had to accept the resignation of his Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun. These dramatic events followed a severe political resistance. According to the newspaper Kleine Zeitung on Thursday submitted an application for an office process that is to be voted on Saturday.

Investigations into turmoil

The South Korean police announced that it has initiated an investigation into alleged turmoil against Yoon. The chief of police Woo Kong Suu said that the presidential immunity does not apply for the criminal offense of the turmoil and that it could be punished with the death penalty. Yoon had called for war law in response to a budget dispute between his party, the Volksmacht party, and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, to protect a "liberal South Korea from the threats from North Korea's troops". A few hours later, however, war law was lifted again, which led to a political chaos, as the Tageblatt reported.

The most important opposition party has enough votes, but requires support from at least eight members of the government to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority for the office. The parliamentary group leader of the Volksmacht party announced that all MPs will be able to vote against the proceedings. If the parliament agrees to the application, Yoon will be suspended until the constitutional court decided, and new elections would have to be carried out within 60 days.
