Vienna in the educational emergency: 1,000 children are waiting for support!

Wien, Österreich - On June 26, 2025, the Vienna Landtag discussed central points on education policy in a meeting. LAbg. Hannes Taborsky from the ÖVP emphasized the fundamental role of education for good salaries and social participation. Vienna has the highest unemployment rate in Austria, whereby 47.9 % of the unemployed do not have any completed school education. Taborsky also referred to the long waiting times for career changers in the education sector, which urgently need to be reformed.

LAbg. Selma Arapovic from the Neos emphasized the political status of education and assumed the responsibility of the federal government for predictable education policy. She also mentioned the need for schools to register their need for additional lessons for the summer months. In her speech, Arapovic also addressed the overall social responsibility for the knowledge of German and suggested measures such as the provision of reading pats and free German courses.

The shortage of teachers as a central problem

The shortage of teachers was discussed by LAbg. Julia Malle (Greens), which criticized the delays in the education sector. More than 1,000 children with disabilities are waiting for suitable offers. Malle also called for an improvement in social mixing within schools. LAbg. Armin Blind from the FPÖ described the committed teachers, who, however, suffer from the consequences of political decisions. He noted that school management is often not allowed to address structural problems, which makes the situation more difficult.

Astrid Pany from the SPÖ complained about the degradation of the educational measures by the opposition and found that the lack of teachers was a problem caused by ÖVP ministers. It called for a needs -oriented financing for language support, which is essential in view of the challenges in the education system.

social measures and survey results

A comprehensive survey by the Institute for Economic Research (IFO) from 2023 shows that 80 % of the respondents support the after -qualification of existing teachers in subjects with a shortage of teachers. Further results show that 76 % are for relief for teachers through new staff for organizational tasks, while 74 % of targeted training sessions to prevent disease -related failures. 69 % of the survey participants see the use of teacher students and career -proof for substitute hours as acceptable, which shows the willingness to solve the problem.

These measures are in the context of the analysis of educational inequality in the Austrian school system from 2012 to 2022. It has turned out that there are clear inequalities in education according to social origin before the crises. The corona -related school closings and the current inflation crisis have increased these challenges. Despite the prospect of equal opportunities, many schools currently apply for reform measures to reduce social inequalities in the school system, as the publication of the Vienna Chamber of Labor shows.

Another point of the session was the shortage of staff in the Vienna Administrative Court, where the personnel requirement for judges is 108, but only 85 jobs are available. The continuous increase in the procedure submitted illustrates how urgently a reform of the system is. The Vice President of the Administrative Court, Maga Beatrix Hornschall, was welcomed at the meeting, which underlines the importance of the topic.

Overall, the meeting in the Vienna Landtag shows the urgent challenges with which the education system is confronted, and the need for extensive reforms in several areas.
