Modern bus shelters and extended lines: Bregenz focuses on sustainability
Something is happening in the area of public transport in Bregenz. The city has decided to fundamentally modernize its bus shelters. This initiative starts with two stops that have now been equipped with a green roof. These “green bus shelters” are not only a pretty sight, they also help reduce CO2 emissions and provide a welcome way to cool down on hot days.
The two stops at HTL Bregenz and on Inselstrasse, which are more than 30 years old, already show what the new design looks like. The entire project is designed to beautify the cityscape and will also be implemented for the remaining bus shelters in Bregenz by the end of February 2025. Mayor Michael Ritsch highlights the importance of this “street furniture” by emphasizing that it not only serves to beautify, but also has real ecological benefits.
Expansion of bus routes
In order to make the new comfort of the waiting shelters quickly accessible to citizens, there will also be changes to the city bus timetable. From December 15th, three city bus lines, specifically lines 102, 103 and 104, will run between the Achsiedlung and the train station until 10:30 p.m. This applies to the period from Monday to Saturday. This measure has a budget of around 110,000 euros, with the city of Bregenz having to cover a share of 46,200 euros itself; the rest is covered by funding.
But the city's long-term goals go even further. Five diesel buses are to be replaced by electric models by the end of 2025. This is done in the spirit of sustainable urban development, which aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of public transport. Mayor Ritsch explains that of the ten buses currently in use, three are already equipped with hybrid technology and another five buses will be converted to purely electric drive. This is an important step towards climate neutrality by 2040.
The first steps have been taken and the citizens of Bregenz can look forward to a modern and environmentally friendly design of their bus stops. Numerous positive changes are imminent that will support both the quality of life in the city and environmental policy goals.
