Turbo for the fire brigade: General overhaul secures budgets in Upper Austria!

On August 13, 2025, the Upper Austrian State Councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger announced a significant step to support the communities in the general overhaul of fire engines. In the event of a press conference, she explained that the goal of this measure is to extend the operational readiness of the vehicles without straining the financial resources of the municipalities. The newly introduced repair bonus is specially intended for vehicles between the ages of 24 and 28 to increase their lifespan to up to 35 years. This could help the municipalities not only save money, but also to keep their emergency services efficient.

The funding requirements include a positive technical examination by the state fire brigade command and compliance with the current security standards. There must also be a decision in the local council. All necessary renovation work, including chassis and build-up renovation, safety-relevant conversions and the renewal of equipment elements are funded. An example of this initiative is the Baumgartenberg volunteer fire brigade, which plans to overhaul your fire engine from 1997 for 43,800 euros, which includes aspects such as paintwork and the removal of rust damage.

Efficiency and budget relief for communities

In addition to promoting the general overhaul of fire engines, Upper Austria has launched a pilot project for the uniform overall procurement of fire engines. Langer-Weninger and her counterpart Michael Lindner are striving to relieve the community budgets and at the same time promote efficiency and sustainability in the fire brigades. In the past, there have been considerable price differences in the procurement of similar fire engines - up to 160,000 euros. The overall procurement could help negotiate fixed prices and guarantee the quality of the equipment.

Municipalities have to decide whether they want to organize vehicles through the overall procurement or through their own purchases. In addition, support places for special vehicles are funded, whereby up to 80% of the costs are covered from the local location. Fire brigade President Robert Mayer also emphasized the indispensability of base and special services in Upper Austria.

Sustainability and inter -municipal support

As part of the efforts to sustainability, the repair bonus is also shown as a guideline for the general overhaul of fire engines. This could extend the use of such vehicles by up to ten years and is part of a broader initiative that also promotes inter -municipal cooperation and standardization of emergency vehicles.

In a similar context, the state indicator reported on the first steps of Baden-Württemberg, where 69 extinguishing group vehicles were advertised. This measure pursues similar goals by helping small communities to reduce the effort for procurement processes and create financial relief. The standardization and the possibility of a common tender have the potential to significantly increase the savings.
