Super markets benefit from the deposit: you earn so much on bottles!
A new disposable deposit system has been in force in Austria since January 1, 2025, which regulates the return of plastic bottles and aluminum cans. 25 cents of deposit must be paid for each bottle or can returned, which are reimbursed when returned. This system was introduced with the aim of increasing the recycling quota and reducing the environmental impact. The supermarkets and other return offices benefit from the returns, since they receive a so -called "handling fairy" for every returned packaging, which serves as a compensation for the effort to withdraw and store the disposable disposable packaging.
The height of the "handling fairy" varies depending on the material and type of withdrawal. When withdrawing using the machine, supermarkets for plastic bottles receive 3.99 cents and 3.72 cents for metal doses. When it comes to manual withdrawal, the amounts are somewhat lower: 2.88 cents for plastic bottles and 2.61 cents for metal doses. This various handling was developed in 2022 with the support of international experts and the Boku Vienna and is evaluated annually by an external auditor.
Dissatisfaction and support for deposit donations
Despite the positive intentions behind the new deposit system, there are also critical voices among the population. Some Austrians express dissatisfaction and obtain their drinks from neighboring countries, where the return of the deposit may seem easier or more cost -effective. Nevertheless, the possibility of the deposit donation is positively accepted by many, as it allows the citizens to donate part of their deposit to non -profit purposes.
The new deposit system requires the deposit to be paid between 0.1 and 3 liters on aluminum doses and plastic bottles. Exceptions are tetrapacks as well as certain products such as milk and medical articles. With these changes, Austria contributes to reducing plastic waste and promotes more conscious consumption behavior.
The change to this system is part of a more comprehensive commitment to improve the recycling rates in the country. The idea behind this is that more people give back their disposable packaging through financial incentives and thus contribute to protecting the environment.
Something has also happened in another area: The technical platform Microsoft 365 has developed new functions that were released on August 16, 2025. These changes affect the deployment environment and the application of the Microsoft tools.
