Special transport causes tunnel chaos: cameras fail!

A spectacular incident occurred in the Gleinalmunnel when a special transport with a heavy -weight machine got into the accident. Shortly after midnight, on February 11, 2025, a massive failure of the surveillance cameras in the tunnel broke out, which had to stop all traffic. The cameras failed one after the other, which resulted in an immediate blocking of the tunnel, like that Small newspaper reported.

The incident led to the quick establishment of a detour via the S6 and the knot Bruck, including the Brucker expressway (S35). Shocked by the sudden situation, the technicians from ASFINAG started working to temporarily repair the damaged cameras. Thanks to its efficiency, the road closure could only be lifted after around two hours so that the traffic could flow again, how ORF Styria reported.

This incident illustrates the challenges that can occur with such special transports. The rapid reaction of those responsible helped quickly get the traffic going again and avoid larger complications. Nevertheless, the technical reliability of the surveillance systems remains an important topic for security in tunnels.
