Graz Marathon 2024: Record participation and the impressive 92-year-old!
Last weekend the Graz Marathon took place with impressive numbers and very special participants. Among the more than 11,650 athletes was Julius Holzner, a 92-year-old athlete who completed the half marathon in a time of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 7 seconds. This makes him the oldest participant in the event, further highlighting his remarkable achievement.
The Graz Marathon, which took place on a sunny Saturday and Sunday, was a real crowd puller. Organizer Michi Kummerer described the atmosphere as an “incredible running festival” and viewed the participation of over 2,000 children on Saturday as an emotional highlight. Overall, a new record was set in terms of the number of participants. A big compliment goes to everyone who took part in this event.
Top sporting performances
The sporting results were also pleasing for the hosts. Lukas Hollaus from Graz won the men's marathon with a fantastic time of 2:17:38 hours. He beat strong international competition, including four Kenyans, and secured Austria's first victory at the Graz Marathon in many years. This result could be seen as a significant step for the domestic running scene.
The women's victory was also a reason for joy for the home fans. Karin Rosenberger crossed the finish line with a time of 2:53:27 hours and secured first place. Her compatriot Eva Berger followed her with a time of 2:56:20 hours, while Jana Backes took third place with 2:57:14 hours. The successes of the Austrian runners filled the traditional red-white-red flag with pride.
With so many participants and great performances, the Graz Marathon 2024 has once again proven that it is an integral part of the running scene in Austria. The enthusiasm of the runners and spectators makes the event a highlight in the annual calendar. Further information about the event and the participants can be found in an article on www.5min.at.
