Winter adjustments: Deutschlandsberg mountain rescue presents new base

The Deutschlandsberg mountain rescue service is ready for the coming challenges of the winter season. She sees her new base, which was recently presented to the public at an open day, as an important building block for continued safe operations. What is particularly noteworthy is that the rescuers had around 18 missions in the last summer season, during which they were required, among other things, to carry out forestry operations, search for missing people and take care of mountain bike accidents.

Daniel Nauschnegg from the mountain rescue service commented on the effects of climate change on their work. He noted that wildfires could play a more significant role in the future. Mountain rescue is often supported in fighting forest fires by taking safety measures. The summer heat also contributes to more people visiting the mountains, which further increases the number of missions.

The new base: A centerpiece of the rescue work

The new base offers extensive mountain rescue capabilities, including space for emergency vehicles such as buses and quads, as well as separate storage rooms for medical supplies and equipment. A special facility is the training area, which ensures that the volunteer rescue workers are optimally trained and can prepare for various operational scenarios.

The modern building is not only a turning point in the history of the Deutschlandsberg mountain rescue service, but also an important signal for future safety work in the mountains. A comprehensive exhibition during the open day allowed visitors to gain insight into the training, equipment and techniques required for operations in difficult terrain.

The roots of mountain rescue in this region go back to the use of premises in the Gasthaus Totz in Bad Schwanberg, followed by various storage facilities, including a container in Deutschlandsberg. The current base is the result of a project that was launched in 2022 and was made possible through the collaboration of many sponsors and organizations.

The training courses scheduled for the end of November in preparation for the winter season will be crucial in ensuring that mountain rescue members are able to carry out their tasks even in adverse conditions. Further information about how the Deutschlandsberg mountain rescue service is adapting to new challenges and what progress has been made in the new base is available can be found here.
